For a number of years the aerospace industry has been making an increasing use of composite materials for manufacturing many aircraft parts, with the different parts being linked by means of adhesive materials.  The verification of an aircraft design requires establishing the response of all of its components under the various loading scenarios, a verification that strongly relies on computational tools.  In this context, one of the challenges faced by the finite element analyses performed is to ensure that the actual behaviours of the different parts of the global structure are adequately represented in the simulation.

The objective of the present work was to produce reliable analyses, using the finite element method, of the response of structures made of composite materials and bonded by means of adhesive materials. To achieve this goal, a certain number of physical tests were conducted on suitable specimens and simulated in the computer; this allowed establishing meaningful comparisons between the simulations and the test results, thus providing confirmation or otherwise of the strategies adopted for modelling the response.

From an experimental point of view, the tests carried out included those designated as Double Cantilever Beam (DBC), Calibrated End Loaded Split (C-ELS), Mixed Mode Bending (MMB), Single Lap Shear (SLS), Double Lap Shear (DLS), and Four Point Bending (4PB). The names already hint the types of test conducted.

In respect of the modelling strategy, the Virtual Crack Closure Technique (VCCT) of Abaqus/Standard was used to simulate the evolution of the specimens, chiefly the adhesive material, in the course of the tests, to assess the ability of the model to represent reliably the governing mechanisms, and to calibrate the relevant material properties.

The results were satisfactory in practically all cases, perhaps with the exception of the DLS tests which posed some particular difficulties. Airbus will be making use of those findings in their future developments.
