Combining the solid-modelling, CAD and CAE capabilities of SOLIDWORKS with the advanced simulation capabilities of SIMULIA yields the unbeatable combination offered by SIMULIAworks. Just a couple of examples.

InFocus Energy Services, Inc. is a Canadian company specializing in the development of solution-driven downhole products for the oil and gas industry. Committed to the development of high-performance, innovative drilling and well-completion products, InFocus is primarily an R&D-based company that licenses its technology and products to strategic partners.

By adding SIMULIAworks to its SOLIDWORKS implementation, InFocus acquired the simulation power and efficiency that it needs to develop innovative, effective downhole products for the oil and gas industry more quickly and affordably.

“With SIMULIAworks, we were able to evaluate a range of geometric and material options, a process that helped us quickly optimize the tapered, barrel-shaped design of the bearings, and also decide the best high-strength steel for the design”, explains Mechanical Engineer/Simulation Specialist Peter Kjellbotn. “Because we analysed our options in software, we didn’t need to physically test all of the possibilities and ran just a few verification tests on the design validated in SIMULIAworks, which confirmed that our simulation results were accurate. This allowed us to optimize critical internal components for cyclic fatigue-loading, a common cause of twist-offs downhole, and confirm a higher torque rating and increased durability for our product.”

Founded by engineering and industrial experts from the tram, railway, and subway car industries, Società Gomma Antivibrante SRL (SGA) is a leading Italian manufacturer of anti-vibration components, including pivots (flexible joints), resilient inserts, bushings, bumpers, guiding components, and suspensions. Most of S.G.A.’s business is in the rail and tram sector, with the remaining products focused on marine and naval applications, specialized vehicles, and industrial machines. S.G.A.’s customers include the major international rail builders (e.g., Alstom, Ansaldobreda, Bombardier, Hitachi), Italian and European railways, and the maintenance workshops connected to them.

Using the cloud-based SIMULIAworks simulation platform, S.G.A. validated the anti-vibration performance of the silent block on the connector arm bushing of the railway carriage for the new Hitachi Rail Italy Rock train car, demonstrating how SIMULIAworks helped them to save time and money by minimizing the number or prototypes.

simuliaworksAccording to Quality System/Test Laboratory Manager Stefano Meli: “Analysis and definition of the overall product and laboratory development of the related load-failure diagrams, and subsequent prototype testing, are the most challenging portions of our product development process. To accelerate time to market, we needed an accurate, efficient solution for conducting nonlinear large displacement analyses and other types of sophisticated simulations.”

This is just a sample of two companies, but it should give you food for thought. With over 40 years of experience in simulation, PRINCIPIA is the ideal partner to help you get the most out of these tools; we are permanently guiding and supporting our customers in their simulation activities. Although SIMULIAworks is mainly oriented to designers, its potential is huge; and your success will depend on having the right partner to support you.
