Pumps and turbines are conspicuous vibration generators. As a consequence, Principia has participated in various projects oriented to establishing the origin of such excessive vibrations and, once identified, to proposing mitigation measures.
Our activities in this field span a notable temperature range. From the vibrations experienced in the downcomer carrying molten salts in a solar plant, to those generated by pumping liquefied natural gas in a regasification plant.
A recent application has been in the desulphurisation building of a thermal plant, excited by the oscillatory loads generated by the nearby pumping systems. Since it was not possible to act directly on the source, the mitigation strategy adopted in this case consisted in interrupting the transmission path of the vibrations.
