Sloshing in storage tanks

Calculation of the freeboard

The application of horizontal dynamic loads in liquid storage tanks produces oscillations of the free surface known as sloshing. The effects of the horizontal loads include impulsive and convective components, the latter are those associated with sloshing.

The freeboard provided in the inner tank must be sufficient for containing the liquid, which is the reason why Principia studies this phenomenon when conducting the seismic design of LNG tanks.

The video shows some results, produced with Abaqus CEL, in relation with the simulation of the phenomenon.
