Impacts on aircraft

Birds, hail, debris, tires...

Principia has analysed multiple impacts against diverse aircraft surfaces, mainly involving birds, but also hail, tire fragments and other debris.

This type of activities includes R&D projects such as CRASURV (CRAsh SURVivability) or, more recently, CRAHVI (CRAshworthiness for High Velocity Impact), both financed by the European Community. Their objectives were the generation and validation of numerical tools able to reduce development time and costs, and the evaluation of new composite materials, all in the context of the problems posed by impacts from birds and other foreign bodies.

Principia is experienced in the generation and calibration of numerical bird models, representing their dynamic effects in those impacts, and in using them in simulations of impacts against various surfaces of aircraft such as the A340.
